Signs Your Fence Needs Painting or Staining

✅ Paint that's peeling, flaking or chalky to the touch
✅ Timber that's turned grey, dry or patchy
✅ Faded Colorbond that no longer matches your home
✅ Stain that has worn off where the sun hits hardest
✅ A tired fence letting down your front yard before you sell

Timber, Picket and Colorbond Fences

Timber and paling fences

Timber can be painted for a solid colour, or stained to keep the look of the grain. We can repair or replace damaged palings and rails first. Then we clean the fence, sand back grey or rough timber and let it dry before the first coat, so the paint or stain soaks in and lasts.

Picket fences

Pickets have a lot of edges, so they need careful cutting-in for a clean finish. We prepare and paint every face, edge and post so nothing is left patchy.

Colorbond fences

Yes, a Colorbond fence can be painted. It's pre-finished steel, so it needs the right preparation: we clean it, key the surface, apply a primer suited to pre-painted steel, then finish with two top coats in the colour you choose.

Paint or Stain: Which Is Right for Your Fence?

Stain suits timber you want to look natural: it soaks into the wood and shows the grain. Paint gives a solid, even paint finish and suits pickets, older timber that has been painted before, and Colorbond. For stained timber we use quality products such as Cutek and Intergrain. We'll recommend what suits your fence when we quote.

How We Paint or Stain Your Fence

  1. Inspect and quote. We look at the fence type, its condition and access, and give you a written quote.

  2. Repair. We repair or replace damaged palings and rails before any coating goes on.

  3. Protect. We cover paths, garden beds and anything nearby.

  4. Clean. We wash off dirt and treat mould. New timber is cleaned of the natural oils and tannins that stop coatings soaking in.

  5. Prepare the surface. Timber: we sand back grey, rough fibres, fill cracks and dust off, then let it dry. Colorbond: we key the surface and treat any surface rust.

  6. Prime. Bare timber and Colorbond get a primer suited to the surface, so the top coats grip.

  7. Paint or stain. We brush, roll or spray, whichever suits your fence, and apply the coats it needs on dry days so the coating can cure properly.

  8. Clean up and check. We tidy the site and walk the fence with you.

What Affects the Cost of Fence Painting?

Every fence is different, so we quote after seeing it. The main things that affect the price are:

✅ the length and height of the fence, and whether we paint one side or both
✅ the type: timber, picket or Colorbond
✅ its condition and how much preparation it needs
✅ paint or stain, and the number of coats
✅ access: garden beds, slopes and tight spaces

“Croydon Paintworks did a fantastic job doing interior and exterior painting at my unit after contacting them with a specific ask. The quotation was fast and well priced, the communication was excellent and the timeliness and flexibility was appreciated. Now my plan A go to painting gang for future work!”

“Andrew has recently repainted some of our internal walls in a more durable paint. He showed up when he said he would. His pricing was competitive and the job was completed on time. He went out of his way to provide sample pots of a few options to ensure I was happy before committing to a colour/product. I’ve asked him to return to complete a further painting project as his professionalism and work was fantastic.”
